How to Keep a Youthful Face with Dentistry

Dr. Kelly’s Dental Tip of the Month:

Remember the bone in your body, and especially in your jaw, is in a state of constant change.   Keep your jaw bone healthy by maintaining your dental cleanings. If your teeth are not cleaned regularly, bacteria will accumulate and eat away your gums and bone.  This bacterial destruction can do irreversible damage to your mouth and underlying facial structure. See your dental hygienist as often as you can for your cleanings.  Only a hygienist can get places a toothbrush and floss can never reach.

Stroke Risk Can Be Identified Using Dental Technology

Posted by DrSmudde | Filed under , , , ,

Blockages can sometimes show up on dental x-rays as opacities (white spots).  Drs. Allen and Kelly Smudde use a specific dental x-ray that can show if a patient has a stroke risk.  We routinely use a radiograph that is called a panoramic radiograph.  Patients love this x-ray because it is taken on the outside of your mouth, and the machine circles around your head.  There are no cumbersome materials inside your mouth.  The x-ray shows your neck up to your eyeballs.  Thus, we are able to see your neck arteries.  We evaluate this area to look for white calcifications that could cause blockages that could lead to a stroke.  We are also able to evaluate a large area of your head and neck to examine our patients for cancer.  This is another great preventive reason to see your dentist regularly and get the x-rays you need.

Straight Teeth are Better For Your Health Than Crooked Teeth

Posted by DrSmudde | Filed under , , , , ,

Many people believe that braces and invisalign are done solely for cosmetic reasons.  Although straightening one's teeth do make your teeth and facial appearance aesthetically more pleasing, it is also better for your health.  Crooked teeth have more areas that can trap bacteria and pathogens.  It is harder for your toothbrush to reach certain areas where your teeth are crooked as well.  This predisposes these areas of your teeth to getting cavities.  Also, areas where you have crooked teeth are more likely to get periodontal disease.  Periodontal disease is an irreversible gum and bone deterioration that is DIRECTLY linked to heart disease.  Once crooked teeth that have periodontal pockets are straightened with braces or invisalign, the pocket readings and bacteria inside those pockets decrease.  If you are thinking about straightening your teeth, it will benefit your looks and your health.
